Windows Server: Increase RDP screen resolution

Windows Server: Increase RDP screen resolution

Your Remote Desktop (RDP) users can only select a resolution of 1024×768 pixels maximum?

This is a common problem with the “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter”, which occurs especially on server systems without a graphics card or GPU. The problem occurs here with Windows Server RDP sessions as well as with TeamViewer sessions. In this article I would like to show you the solution for this problem:

To get HD resolution (1920×1080) for RDP, you have to use a little trick and install the ASPEED driver (Microsoft Basic Display Adapter) from Supermicro.

You can currently download this driver here (external link to Supermicro). Once the download is complete, you have to extract the correct driver. Afterwards, update the driver software (with the unzipped driver) for the driver “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” via the device manager.

After the driver has been successfully installed, you can select a larger screen resolution, just like on all other Windows systems.
